Fasting?

After Ellie had a major blow-out on Saturday, I decided to delay putting on a new outfit until she'd had her lunch. The result: She looks a little like a hillrod wearing just her bib (and a rice cereal goatee...) But it's cute!
On a related note (to eating, not being a 'hill person' — thank you Modern Family for introducing us to that new term!)... but on the subject of eating, Ellie is having some serious issues with it the past few days.
For some reason, she does not want to eat solid foods anymore. And she doesn't even finish her bottle most of the time. I'm sure she's not wasting away, but it's frustrating that she refuses to open her mouth every time we put her in the highchair. Any one have thoughts on this? When we first started solids, she was eating like a champ. And Ellie seemed to like the veggies that she's now refusing to eat, i.e. sweet potatoes and squash. She's not even tasting them, just keeping her mouth clamped shut. And if I pry it open, she just spits the food back out. Is this just a phase, maybe? Is she fasting for Lent?

  1. First of all... so cute! Second of all, it seems like lots of the moms from swim lessons are having similar issues. Their kids were fine eaters and then went on strike for some reason. Lucy never quit eating all together, but does seem to go through phases where she's more or less tolerant of eating. Our doctor just keeps reminding us that babies will eat to meet their needs and that all we can do is offer...

  2. The Spawn did the exact same thing! At first he was all for solid foods and then went through a phase where he chose to eat nothing. Sadly, I can't remember how we got out of that phase but as he is now 4 1/2 years old I am quite sure that he resumed eating at some point. It may be that she is getting used to the new "full feeling" in her tummy. Solids are harder to digest than liquids so maybe her tummy is just getting a handle on new foods.

    She is gorgeous BTW!

  3. Have you tried giving her different flavors? Maybe she'll take something she wasn't crazy about before. Or maybe different temperatures. I had a kid once who would only eat his veggies if they were warmed and his fruits if they were chilled. I have no idea how his mom figured that out, but it worked really well for them. I have to second what Megan said, babies eat when they're hungry and don't when they're not. She'll get thru it and so will you!

  4. Thanks so much for the help! I talked to one of her teachers at school, and she's apparently been crying most of the day :( It makes me think that it is teething, but I wish she could just tell us what's going on. She had some tylenol with lunch, so hopefully will have a better afternoon.
